  • Sustainability Role in overall company's strategic plans
Hawthorn Handmade is committed to building an environmentally sustainable business which aims to minimise our impact on the world for current and future generations. Our key goal is to reduce our environmental impact in all we do, both directly on our own site and through our network of suppliers and partners.
    Sustainability initiatives
We are achieving this by: • Purchasing as many components for our products as possible from within the UK. • Reducing unnecessary travel through working from home initiatives and video call meetings. • Reviewing all internal processes and systems to ensure they are optimised and as efficient as possible. • Reducing, reusing and recycling all waste where possible. • Removing all single use non-recycled plastics from our products. To achieve this we still need to find an alternative to plastic for the windows on our embroidery and weaving boxes and the loom bags, and an alternative safe needle for our weaving kits. All other plastics used are made from 100% post-consumer waste and are fully recyclable (bundle boxes and felting needle cases). • Monitoring and managing our use of energy and water, and maximising the efficiency and effectiveness with which they are used. • Ensuring environmental issues including climate change are taken into account when developing new products. This includes looking for British manufacturers where possible and sourcing sustainable materials such as the FSC & PEFC certified board and water-based, non-toxic, biodegradable glue used to make our packaging. • Working with our suppliers to reduce waste before it comes to us – for instance by asking supplier to remove excess plastic packaging before shipping. • Encouraging our employees to work and conduct themselves in an environmentally responsible manner both at work and at home.
    Pledges for the year
We hope to change the plastic windows in our embroidery and weaving boxes to a viable alternative, and we will continue to work hard on all the above initiatives.

    Packaging
We are in the process of making our packaging plastic free
We are in the process of making our packaging compostable
Two thirds of our kits are now in plastic free and fully compostable packaging. The remaining kits contain a small plastic window which we are actively working on alternatives for.
    Materials
We have products made from recycled materials
    Our products are plastic free
We have products made from sustainability sourced raw materials
90% of our products are plastic free. Where plastic is the current only available option we are working with suppliers to identify future opportunities for change. We have changed our secure needle storage cases to a 100% PCW material that is fully recyclable. The plastic boxes for our wool bundles is made from 100% PCW material and is fully recyclable.
    Ethical Considerations
Fair wages are paid to the people who make our products
Our products are made by people employed in good working conditions
Within the workplace where our products are made there is commitment to Non-Discrimination Gender Equality and Freedom of Association
We are working towards being a living wage employer by the end of 2022. All products are made in our own manufacturing facility in the UK. Where we source components from other locations, 2022 will see the development of our supply chain policy looking at environmental and ethical practises throughout the chain.
    Enviromental Impact
    We have a sustainability policy
We consider the environmental impact when creating our products
