SUMAQ QARA SAC
Sumaq Qara, a word in the Quechua language that means "Beautiful Leather”, was the inspiration of the founders, Mr. and Mrs. Torres, to create beautiful crafts. As a result, and to continue the family legacy as well as the commitment to support women who had been victims of sexual and psychological abuse in the highlands of Peru, the daughters of the founders, Roxana, Elile, and Yuli, became business partners. Hence, since 2006, Sumaq Qara has been working on promoting Peruvian crafts while giving work to the artisans.
The company has a workshop in Ayacucho, which is one of the most ancient and prominent colonial cities of Peru, known as the “Capital City of Folk Art and Peruvian Craftsmanship”. Ayacucho is recognized for its different types of crafts, including retablo, tapestry, Huamanga stone carving, pottery, textiles, and embroidery.
Sumaq Qara has been working for around 19 years with Artisans from Ayacucho, bringing opportunities and a fair wage. Giving constant training in which the artisans can merge traditional techniques from Ayacucho with modern trends.
Each group of artisans has a leader who works directly with us, supervising the people from the communities. Leaders are in charge of gathering the artisans and give them the necessary instructions for
production. We work with approximately 500 artisans who are divided into 17 communities.
We currently have our own brand, Riti Sami, which is registered in the United States and Canada. We also have a wholesale store and a warehouse in the Netherlands for distribution throughout the European Union and Asia.
