We Exist to Grow UK Retail
The headlines have been relentless. "Retail crisis" "High Street decline" "Independent stores closing" It's enough to make anyone feel like the battle is already lost.
But here's what the doom-scrolling doesn't tell you. UK retail sales were worth £517 billion in 2024, an increase of 1.4% on 2023. Retail is growing. And there are over 304,000 retail businesses across the country, each one a testament to resilience, creativity, and sheer determination.
And at Spring Fair, we're not just reading the news, we're actively working to change the narrative. Our aim is to be a lighthouse amongst the dark headlines, because we believe that with the right support, independent retail won’t just survive. It will thrive.
From Survey to National Conversation
When we partnered with SaveTheHighStreet.org to survey independent retailers across the UK, we didn't anticipate how widely our findings would resonate or how quickly they would spark real action.
Our research made undeniable waves. The Times picked it up and MPs took notice. Manuela Perteghella, Member of Parliament for Stratford-on-Avon, wrote to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade citing our findings. The voice of independent retail was finally being heard at the highest levels of government.
And it’s no surprise, the statistics were incredibly sobering.
- Over 50% of independent retailers had considered closing their doors.
- 84% lacked confidence that the government was doing enough to support them.
But the survey also revealed something crucial: independent retailers knew exactly what they needed. Their message was clear and coordinated. They asked for increased grants and funding, freezes or reductions in business rates, better high street infrastructure, more community-focused events, affordable parking, and stronger marketing support.
And crucially, amongst it all, they still showed up. They kept their doors open. They innovated, adapted, and refused to give up. Because that's what independent retail does.
Beyond Talk: Taking Action
At Spring Fair, we believe action speaks louder than words. That's why we've launched our Retail Makeover Mission; a practical, hands-on initiative to help independent retailers not just survive, but thrive.
We're providing free toolkits covering everything from PR strategies and trade show planning to merchandising, buying techniques, and retail strategy. A gold mine of practical advice from people who understand your world, because they've lived it themselves.
Our twice-yearly events at the NEC Birmingham bring together thousands of retailers, hundreds of exhibitors, and countless opportunities to discover new products, compare suppliers, and stay ahead of trends. With free attendance and multiple content stages featuring keynote talks and panel discussions, we've created a space where the retail community can learn, connect, and grow together.
Your Voice Matters
The parliamentary debate sparked by our survey proves that when independent retailers speak with a united voice, people have to listen. We're committed to continuing this advocacy work. Our surveys give you a platform. Our relationships with MPs and policymakers give you access.
Because while the headlines may focus on closures, they miss the bigger story that independent retail is growing. Consumers are returning to high streets. In a world that's increasingly digital, people crave these real connections, tangible experiences, and the personal touch that only independent retailers can provide.
Building Momentum in 2026
This is just the beginning. As we look ahead to Spring Fair 2026, taking place from 1st to 4th February at the NEC Birmingham, we're doubling down on our commitment to UK retail.
We're expanding our toolkit library, strengthening our advocacy work, and enhancing our Retail Makeover Mission to reach more businesses with practical support.
Most importantly, we're listening. You told us you need targeted support and practical action. You told us you need to know someone has your back.
We hear you. And we're here.
Yes, the challenges are very real. But so is the opportunity. While others focus on the darkness, we aim to illuminate a new path forward, and prove that with the right support, independent retail has an incredibly bright future.
The conversation has started. The momentum is building. And we're just getting started.
