  • Sustainability Role in overall company's strategic plans
At Portfolio Home, we recognise our responsibilities as a business and we’re determined to help build a sustainable future. We place a high priority on operating Portfolio Home to high standards of integrity and ethics.
    Sustainability initiatives
We recognise the importance of championing a better way of doing business and doing the right thing by people and our planet. That’s why we’re continually developing our sustainable initiatives to help reduce our carbon footprint, offer an eco-friendly alternative and present a fairer way of operating. Avoidable Plastic Waste We are proud to announce we were one of the first home textile suppliers within the UK to change from single-use virgin plastic to reusable and more environmentally friendly fabric bags. The fabric bags offer a reusable ‘green’ alternative and use no plastic whatsoever. Portfolio Home also has packaging in widely recyclable and reusable card giftboxes with zero plastic waste. Selected products within our collection have a natural material content such as our luxury Prestige linen union which uses 100% cotton blended with a quality natural linen. Both materials are made from natural fibres and provide consumers with many benefits. The dyes we use are also certified to be harmless and eco-friendly. To lower our carbon dioxide emissions, the Portfolio Home brand has actively reduced our energy consumption by using renewable sources of energy such as electric and hybrid company vehicles to endeavour to help reduce carbon emissions to zero.
    Pledges for the year
Portfolio Home is committed to making changes to the way products are produced, ensuring that that all packaging is widely recyclable by 2022 and that many products within the range are made from more responsibly sourced or recycled materials by 2030.
    Sustainable Products
    The Pure Cotton Collection
Portfolio Home’s new bed linen features a variety of duvet covers and pillowcases produced from 100 per cent cotton via the BCI system of the mass balance. With cotton being the only material composition within the Pure Cotton Collection, Portfolio Home can reinforce the legitimacy of production ensuring ethical farming standards have been met with BCI.
    The Prestige Collection
The Prestige Collection is a range of 100% Cotton and Linen Union bedding which are made with natural fibres packaged in an eco-friendly, recyclable cardboard giftbox.
    The Premier Curtain Collection
The new collection reflects Portfolio Home’s longstanding commitment to providing higher quality and beautiful designs coupled with more sustainable home living solutions. The new collection consists of readymade curtains crafted with quality materials such as cotton which is responsibly sourced.
    AT THE FAIR
    NEW TO THE FAIR
    Social equity at your company
We work closely only with our global network of trusted suppliers with the aim that the materials used in the manufacture processes are traceable, and socially and ethically-sourced. Our suppliers have factories in the UK, Pakistan, China, India, Turkey, Portugal and Bangladesh. We regularly review our suppliers’ policies and practices and expect them to adhere to our high standards. All our partnered factories are visited and audited by a representative of the company prior to any business relationship. We endeavour to ensure our products are fairly made with a priority on fair and ethical working practices. We assess our suppliers’ goods and we will only work with suppliers when they can demonstrate best practice, quality goods and work towards protecting the environment, conservation, human rights and renewable resourcing. Our supplier certification must include: • ISO 90001: 2000 • Oeko-Tex Standard100 • ETI (Ethical Trade Initiative) • C-TPAT • SEDEX Member Status All suppliers are issued with and are expected to comply with Portfolio Home’s Anti-Bribery and Corruption Policy and Ethical Trading Policy. As we actively review our supply chains, we have a zero-tolerance policy on child labour, modern slavery or animal testing. Portfolio Home is committed to ensuring our suppliers adhere to the high standards of ethics and we outline our Ethical Practice Policy. Suppliers must demonstrate that they provide safe working conditions and that they are committed to working to the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code and to ongoing improvements to employee working conditions.
    Packaging
Our packaging is made with recycled content
We are in the process of making our packaging plastic free
Where plastic packaging has been unavoidable, the business made a conscious decision to move away from PVC non-recyclable single-use plastic to LDPE4 plastic packaging which is accepted in a number of UK recycling schemes. We are currently working towards reducing our use of plastic packaging across our range of products. Within our flexible fulfilment services, particularly Direct Dispatch (also know as drop ship) we only use mailing bags made from 100% recycled material. Our polythene mailing bags are also widely recyclable which significantly reduces our carbon footprint.
    Materials
We have products made from sustainability sourced raw materials
We use Better Cotton Initiative Cotton in products we are launching exclusively at Springfair. BCI is a non-profit organisation and is the largest cotton sustainability programme in the world to transform cotton production worldwide. BCI farmers receive training on how to use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil and natural habitats. These farmers gain economic support through BCI members who have committed to shared values by incorporating Better Cotton in their supply chains. Although cotton is a natural fibre, the production of conventional cotton is highly unsustainable. The increased uptake of Better Cotton leads directly to increased investment in farmer training, better work environment, and biodiversity. With our products BCI produced, we’re supporting the BCI achieve these aims for people and planet.
    Ethical Considerations
We challenge our suppliers to report any ethical issues they identify
    We have an ethical policy
Portfolio Home has a dedicated Quality Audit and Product Technologist department that check quality and standards of products before they reach our customers – ensuring only the best products are offered to consumers. We only work with skilled textile suppliers, textile designers and specialists and try to promote quality methods of production. Any violations of the Portfolio Home’s Ethical Trading Policy will lead to the termination of the business relationship. We have put procedures in place to ensure the maximum protection against hidden labour exploitation of workers or applicants by third party/ rogue individuals. All employment of staff by Portfolio Home (Bridstock Gate Ltd) is in the UK and is conducted in line with UK law in regards to employment and health & safety.
    Enviromental Impact
    We have a sustainability policy
We consider the environmental impact when creating our products
Some of the processes we use to manufacture products are energy efficient
Some of the processes we use to manufacture products are water efficient
In the manufacture of our products, many of our partner mills have biological waste water treatment plants and discharge zero hazardous chemicals. Treating the water and reuse of water to some proportion makes this resource more sustainable. The treated water portion is drained to preserve aquatic life. To reduce energy consumption, many of our partner mills have invested in renewable energy solar power. Generating electricity in the form of collected the hot smoke of generators and reuse it in an attached steam boiler to produce steam. In this way some of our mills are reducing the carbon emissions in the production of our products and and making this source of energy sustainable.
