Founder Sharon Keilthy:

Jiminy is the brainchild of Dublin mum Sharon Keilthy. Sharon found toy shopping for her daughter frustrating. Nearly everything was plastic wrapped in plastic, shipped 10,000km. So in 2018 Sharon left her senior role at an American multinational and set up Jiminy to give eco-minded customers more options.

Eco-activist Sharon says: "My vision is an eco-section in every toyshop. I want to do something for the environment. Instead of complaining about how eco-unfriendly toys are, I figured, why not use my business experience and be the toy company I hope the others will become? This is my eco-activism, activism through business."

Sharon adds: “I’ve noticed how activated about the environment kids are this year. They admire Greta Thunberg and the school strikers. And they are learning about and acting for the environment at school.”

And it appears Sharon’s vision is on-trend. About half of shoppers actively avoid plastic and most Europeans who shop local do so for environmental and sustainability reasons. But the toy industry is lagging behind this demand. 90% of toys are still made from new plastic. And 80% are made in China (and more in other parts of the Far East) - that's 10,000km of 'toy-miles' vs only 500-1,500km for European-made toys.

Why new plastic in toys is bad:

  1. The destruction and pollution from extracting and refining the oil to make the plastic. This alone is three-quarters of LEGO's carbon footprint. The $80 billion of new-plastic toys made globally each year release so much CO2, it would take 1 billion trees to absorb it all;
  2. Some plastics and the chemicals that make them are toxic and even carcinogenic. A 2017 test by four EU countries of 104 Chinese-made plastic toys found illegal levels of chemicals in over 30%; and
  3. Most plastic toys are mixed materials and can't be recycled.
