  • Sustainability Role in overall company's strategic plans
Hawthorn Handmade is committed to building an environmentally sustainable business that aims to minimise our impact on the world for current and future generations. Our key goal is to reduce our environmental impact in all we do, both directly on our own site and through our network of suppliers and partners.
    Sustainability initiatives
    • Purchasing as many components for our products as possible from within the UK • Reducing unnecessary travel through working from home initiatives and video call meetings • Reviewing all internal processes and systems to ensure they are optimised and as efficient as possible • Reducing, reusing, and recycling all waste where possible • Removing all single-use non-recycled plastics from our products. To achieve this we still need to find an alternative to plastic for the windows on our embroidery and weaving boxes and the loom bags, and an alternative safe needle for our weaving kits. All other plastics used are made from 100% post-consumer waste and are fully recyclable (bundle boxes and felting needle cases) • Approximately 85% of the wool used in our kits is British farmed to UK welfare standards. The rest is ethically sourced from non-mulled flocks in South America and South Africa. All our dyed wool is commercial acid dyed conforming to Oeko-Tex 100 Quality System and EN71 • Monitoring and managing our use of energy and water, and maximising the efficiency and effectiveness with which they are used • Ensuring environmental issues including climate change are taken into account when developing new products. This includes looking for British manufacturers where possible and sourcing sustainable materials such as the FSC & PEFC certified board and water-based, non-toxic, biodegradable glue used to make our packaging • Working with our suppliers to reduce waste before it comes to us – for instance by asking supplier to remove excess plastic packaging before shipping • Encouraging our employees to work and conduct themselves in an environmentally responsible manner both at work and at home
    Pledges for the year
toxic, biodegradable glue used to make our packaging • We aim to remove any virgin plastic from our packaging over the next year
