After relocating their design business to the Lake District in 2002, just a few years into their new life, designers Diane and Spencer Hannah, were inspired to create a contemporary gift brand for the Lake District, the UK’s largest National Park.
On a city break to Helsinki, being amongst the scandi-style design they both loved, they recognized a gap in the market for high quality, design led gifts for visitors to the Lakes. Returning to the UK, it was a hike in the hills that was to provide them with the inspiration. Half way up a fell in the Langdales they bumped into a Herdwick, the native sheep which roams free amongst the mountains of Cumbria. It’s cute and smiling face gave them the idea for the brand, Herdy.
From humble beginnings in 2007, with only three products, the company has grown into a multi-million pound business with a range of products & licensing deals encompassing gift, homeware, kitchen textiles, ceramics, clothing and accessories, as well as products made from Herdwick wool, including a British made mattress with Herdwick wool inside. Herdysleep supports fair trade with the Lake District's unique fell farming community, buying the wool direct to give the farmer a better deal. Herdy is rooted in a strong social purpose, simple family values, a passion to do the right thing and a dream to become the most lovable, family-friendly brand personality in the world. Responsibility and giving back have been at the heart of the business from the beginning, the Herdy Fund providing funds for rural community projects, as well as supporting local fell farmers and the Herdwick sheep breed. The company has donated close to £200k to good causes to date.
The brand has established itself as an icon and an ambassador for the region as well as becoming a brand with a genuine story and social purpose. This has led to a committed and highly engaged social media following of over 110k fans around the world for whom Herdy represents positivity, fun, community, and inclusivity.
Line Collection
Herdy are launching their striking monochrome range of ‘Line’ kitchen Textiles at this year’s Spring Fair. Historic graphite mining in the Lake District is the inspiration behind the design featuring a stylised pencil line drawing of Herdy amidst the undulating landscape of the Cumbrian Fells.
Mined as early as the 16th century in Cumbria, the large quantities of graphite found at Borrowdale were the purest quality ever to be found. For many years Borrowdale graphite was used for marking sheep (most probably Herdwicks), although probably best known now for its use in the finest drawing pencils.
Now the two have been brought together in this ewe-nique range of kitchen textiles including apron, oven gloves and tea towel, adding to a fine bone china mug, handmade solid beech chopping board, cork tablemats and coasters, and new Herdy wall art produced by The Art Group.

Herdy says ‘Come Bye’ with new Sheppy soft toy
Herdy are introducing their cute and lovable ‘Sheppy the Sheepdog’ plush toy at this year’s Spring Fair. The soft plush toy has already proved to be a hit on social media and a worthy companion the company’s best seller ‘Little Herdy’ soft toy. The Sheppy character has been featured on many of Herdy’s products to date but this is the first time it has been realised three dimensionally. The toy is suitable from 12 months+.
