The award winning Carnaby Christmas decorations, which were switched on last night, had a psychedelic theme this year to launch the 50th anniversary of one of London’s most iconic shopping areas.
Celebrations included an open air swinging 60’s disco with a live DJ set from Eddie Piller, founder of Acid Jazz Records. Go-go dancers set the mood and got the crowd ready for the countdown of the celebrations, which launched in a cascade of glitter and flashing lights which got the crowd cheering. Goodies bags full of retro sweets and other surprises were handed out to the public who danced the hardest.
Carnaby is known for its quirky Christmas decorations. This year the area’s twelve streets were filled with fifteen, six metre high inflatable decorations declaring 60’s festive messages of Love, Joy, Hope and Peace, along with four, six metre high inflatable hot pink reindeers, surrounded by brightly coloured suspended Christmas trees and sparkling lights.
Kingly Court is now home to beautiful, shimmering light installations and the Newburgh Quarter is full of Christmas trees in vibrant 60’s colours.
The decorations are designed by Paul Dart of the James Glancy Design Agency, who used colours are reminiscent of the 60’s, including pillar box red, bright yellow, orange, acid green, purple and candy pink.
The celebrations will continue with a Carnaby Shopping Party on Thursday November 12, where over 100 shops, bars and restaurants will offer savings of 20 per cent to customers.
